October Is for Breast Cancer

The Women Behind the Fight
Graphic created on Canva by Hannah Marte. Pictures provided by Dana Reker and Hannah Marte.

According to breastcancer.org, about 13% of women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their life. This translates to 1 in 8 females. Women’s chance of getting breast cancer doubles if they have a blood relative that has battled breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. Upper School teacher, Dana Reker recently went through a tough battle with breast cancer. Throughout her journey she referred to the quote, “win the day,” to get her through every tough battle she faced. My mom, Rochelle Marte also faced breast cancer in the middle of the pandemic. Throughout my mom’s whole journey she remained strong and couldn’t have done it without her support system. At the age of 40, every year women are required to get a mammogram to check for breast cancer. Please don’t procrastinate getting a mammogram, being able to detect the cancer as early as possible will only improve one’s outcome. For those of you that have battled breast cancer or know anyone that has or currently is, your fight is an inspiration to girls all across the world every single day.
