The seniors only have a short amount of time left before they have to face the world. Rather than worry about that, though, they are focusing on the senior traditions that they will soon get to partake in. Several of them shared some of their favorite memories so far this school year that they anticipated in the month to come.
AJ Hoffler ‘23, a student and defensive end for WA football, shared his favorite memory and a bit about the benefits of being a senior.
“One of the best memories this year has been beating Marist in football,” Hoffler said. “Being a senior has helped me in sports from a leadership perspective.”
In an emailed response, Vintage Eagle Sarah Beth Couch ‘23, echoed Hoffler with her favorite memory during this past year in an emailed response that also took place on the football field.
“My favorite memory that I have experienced during my Senior year so far is winning Homecoming Queen,” Couch said. “It was such an honor to represent not only my class but Woodward High School as a whole.”
Vintage Eagle Sasha Barjon ‘23, discussed senior traditions that she’s heard of and those that she is looking forward to.
“We start hearing about them at the end of junior year and there is Last Blast, there is the Senior Lock-in, and Spring Fling which is for everybody but is really special for the seniors,” Barjon said.
Couch also discussed senior traditions and those that she is looking forward to.
“I have indeed heard about Senior traditions such as the lock-in and last blast,” Couch said. “I think Senior traditions are fun and memorable; it makes seniors feel special about all the hard work we have done throughout the years. It is like a reward… It is definitely a jump scare that I am headed off to college in a few months, so I for sure want to make my last few months as a high schooler worth wild. I try to participate in everything that goes on. So you will definitely catch me doing the senior traditions.”
SGA President Griffin Sorrow ‘23 paralleled Couch on senior traditions.
“I love the senior traditions,” Sorrow said. “I think they are fun, gives people a good opportunity just to relax and enjoy each other. It’s like goodbye which is sad, but fun… I am looking forward to rip day/drip day. …I think it’s going to be fun, and Last Blast, well all of it is good so I am looking forward to it all.”
Many of the seniors also discussed friendships and how being a senior impacts them.
“I don’t know if I have expectations, I just know that it is going to be fun because I feel like the senior class just comes together at the end of the four years,” Sorrow said. “I think it’s going to be fun being with people that you’ve gone to school with for forever.”
Not only did Sorrow comment on friendships within senior traditions, but Barjon also discussed them.
“I really feel like Woodward sets you up to make lifelong friendships, like I’ve been in school with some people for 12 years and that is crazy to think about,” Barjon said. “The extracurriculars and everything you do outside of class is really where you meet your best friends that you’re going to keep for life.”
Barjon echoes Sorrow and Couch in what she is looking forward to the most in her last few months as a senior.
“I am really looking forward to the last day of school for seniors because I think everyone is going to have a lot of fun, take a lot of pictures with each other and also the college-decision day where you paint your school on your skirt,” Barjon said. “I am really looking forward to that, too.”
