October is coming up, and there is a lot to get excited for at Woodward . There is so much more that did not make the list, but I have narrowed it down to my top six. Some honorable mentions that didn’t make the list but are still things to get very excited for are the Middle School fall theater production and the Upper School choral concert. October is one of the busiest months of the year at Woodward, with a lot to get excited for.
6. Red Cross Blood Drive
The Blood Drive is an annual event through the Red Cross. Any faculty or students ages 17 and older can go to Dobbs Gym on Thursday, Oct. 5th to donate blood to the cause (the school will put out more information about the Blood Drive and how to sign up for a time slot). People suffer from diseases, sicknesses, and injuries that need more blood cells to treat, which requires blood donations. The Blood Drive is a great way to help this good cause. For those who aren’t old enough to donate blood or don’t want to get blood drawn, it is still exciting that people in need are being helped by the generous blood donations.
5. Fall In
It’s time to get all in for Fall In. Fall In is a fundraiser at Woodward, where people can donate during the month of October to the school. Tuition doesn’t cover all the costs of running Woodward every year, and donations during Fall In help make up for that, as well as providing extra money to make the school even better than it already is. This fundraiser lasts from Oct. 2nd until Nov. 10th. While it is mostly parents who donate money, students will benefit from it and can still encourage their parents to donate. Fall In is a great opportunity to be able to donate to the school. I’m all in.
4. Academy-Wide Late Start
Who doesn’t love a late start? We all have to get up early every morning and go to school. Late starts give everyone a chance to sleep in and have a shortened school day. This will be held on Oct. 17th.
3. Upper School Marching Band Competition
The marching band is very talented and works very hard. They play at all the football games and do a great job at adding a better atmosphere to the games. However, the football games aren’t the only opportunity to get to see them perform. The marching band doesn’t get as much attention as some other extracurricular activities, and it’s time to show them some more attention. The marching band competition, scheduled for Oct. 28th at the Blue Ridge Music Festival in Blue Ridge, Georgia, is the perfect opportunity for that. The competition is hosted at Fannin County High School, and tickets can be purchased at the gate upon arrival.
2. Varsity Volleyball State Playoffs
The varsity volleyball team is trying to win the state title this year, and they need our support. It is always fun to cheer on fellow students as they compete and represent our school. The first round of the playoffs will be on Oct. 17th or 18th (the dates will be put out on the schedule when it gets closer to the playoffs). The volleyball team has been state champion ten times, most recently in 2010. Could this be the year we win our first state championship in 13 years? It could be. Go War Eagles!
1. Homecoming
Best for last. Lots of high schoolers’ favorite memories are made at Homecoming. The dance, the parade, the football game and voting for Homecoming court are all what make Homecoming one of the most looked-forward-to events in the Upper School! This dance is on Oct. 21 and is open to any Upper School student. The homecoming dance is a fun event to hang out with your friends, dance and have some fun. The football game and parade are both on Oct. 27th. The parade will take place during the day. Everyone will have a shortened school day with all their classes that day in the morning, and then after lunch, the parade will take place for the rest of the school day. It parades around the entire school, and is extremely fun for everyone that is involved or watching it.
