Last week was Homecoming Spirit Week, the week that leads up to the Homecoming football game. Student Government Association (SGA) were able to get four out-of-uniform days this year, which included the following themes: Homecoming shirts on Tuesday, jersey day on Wednesday, class colors on Thursday and homecoming movie themes on Friday. The most eventful and exciting theme for most students was Friday’s theme when freshmen were sci-fi, sophomores were comedy, juniors were action and seniors were horror.
Overall, there seemed to be a positive reaction towards Homecoming Spirit Week. Kira McCoy ‘24 noted that the week added to the atmosphere at school.
“I think it was really nice,” Kira said. “It was fun to see people, you know, for people to show their true selves and, you know, get to wear clothes that are not uniform and just get to exhibit their true personalities.”
Maggie Nievera ‘24, a Varsity football cheerleader, highlighted the Homecoming Parade for being a memorable part of Homecoming Spirit Week.
“Probably the parade [was my favorite] because for cheerleaders, we ride on top of Jeeps,” Maggie said. “And we stopped at each school and we’ve performed for, like, Primary School, Lower School [and] Middle School. So it’s really fun for us, like, to be in the parade.”
She noted that there was a noticeable difference when people left the game early because the environment lacked the same energy.
“It was [a] super fun first half, you know,” Maggie said. “Everybody showed up and then, at halftime, when […] everybody left, it was kind of awkward.”
Maggie emphasized that people showing up to the Homecoming football game definitely impacts the players and makes the environment better for everyone. Notably, the War Eagles football team won 38-8 against our opponent, Mundy’s Mill Tigers.
“I really encourage everybody to go to the games and stay for the games because the team really does play better when there’s, like, a student section, and there’s support, and, like, it’s more fun overall for the cheerleaders if there’s people there,” Maggie said. “But I mean, we were supposed to be [a] close game when we won 38-8, so that was… good.”
