For many students, summer break is best spent sleeping in, going on vacation, attending summer camp, or exploring personal pursuits. But for some it means more than just plain old relaxation: it’s a time to earn extra money so they can spend it as they please, purchase something special, or save for future endeavors. And to find a job, WA students don’t have to travel far!
Dr. Jamy Juhan shares that here at Woodward, there are tons of summer jobs offered to high school students.
“Each summer, Woodward hires approximately 130 high school and college-aged students to work with the summer camp programs,” Dr. Juhan said. “This includes Odyssey Day Camp, specialty camps, and WACtivity aftercare camp. We also employ lifeguards, student nurse assistants and safety monitors. Kristin Jackson also hires students to work with the Horizon’s scholars here on campus each summer. Finally, CJ Williams hires students to help support our facilities team as part of the Zoo Crew.”
Mazie Juhan ‘26, a former WA summer employee, talks about the jobs she’s had, why she chose to enter the Woodward workforce and her tips for landing the perfect job.
“So over the summer was the first time I officially worked for Woodward,” Mazie said. “I was a lifeguard and a counselor, but I’ve also helped out with camps for, like, service hours and things like that. So my mom encouraged me to get this job because she… runs the camps, but I also wanted a summer job because one, I … need the money, and two, it’s something to do. [To get a job, I would say] probably ask around, see if there’s a job opening, and see if it sounds interesting.”
If working during the summer sounds like a chore, don’t fret. Sabenah Abudu-Abrams ‘26 shares what it’s like to work at WA during the school year!
“So I started working here at the beginning of the school year,” Sabenah shared. “I worked at the snack bar from… early on in the school year to the beginning of the second semester…I learned from friends about working at the snack bar. And it was just something that I heard about, so I thought it would be a good idea. And since it’s… at school, it’s pretty easy.”
