The Time for Giving

How Students Celebrate Thanksgiving

Many people look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving with their families. Thanksgiving is known for its delicious food which typically includes the following traditional foods: turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and pumpkin pie for dessert. In addition to the food, Thanksgiving is known for being a holiday where people spend precious time with their loved ones and express their gratitude towards them. And in the process, students celebrate Thanksgiving according to their family traditions.

Cecilia Anderson ‘24 participates in the typical Thanksgiving traditions, particularly with her family.

“I celebrate Thanksgiving by spending the day cooking with my family and watching football,” Anderson said.

However, Anderson also has her own special traditions with her family that she anticipates every year.

“My personal favorite Thanksgiving tradition in my family is waking up early and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the National Dog Show while eating cinnamon rolls and drinking hot chocolate,” Anderson said.

She “believe[s] that Thanksgiving is a time to appreciate the many wonderful things that you have and spend quality time with your family.” This thought was echoed by Lucy Pittman ‘23.

“I always go and visit extended family,” Pittman said. “It doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving without them.”

Pittman cherishes the food tradition of Thanksgiving. She appreciates how she and her family come together to make a delicious meal, and, specifically, she values having the independence of making her own food to contribute to the meal.

“My favorite tradition is our family dinner,” Pittman said. “We all pitch in, and I’m always in charge of the pumpkin pie [which is] the best part.”

She finds that Thanksgiving is an important holiday to reflect on what she is thankful for in her life in addition to it being an important day for spending time with family.

“Celebrating Thanksgiving is important to me because it gives me time to reflect and be thankful for the everyday gifts that I might sometimes take for granted,” Pittman said. “It is also special because we get to celebrate and enjoy family time, something we don’t get a lot during the rest of the year.”
