[im]permanence
Impermanence : noun : the state of lasting for only a limited moment in time.

Every single thing that exists in the universe exists in a state of impermanence. From the warm summer’s breeze and the setting sun, to your first heartbreak and the scab that covers a scraped knee before one day falling off, everything we experience exists only temporarily. Since nothing lasts forever, a certain kind of freedom is born. Pain, insecurity, stress, and suffering eventually fade away, and mistakes can be made because they most likely won’t matter in a few years time.
But a certain kind of heartache is also born alongside this freedom. Connection, familiarity, joy, and peace are innately temporary, too, and at times it feels like all we wish for is more time with those we love. The beauty of impermanence is complex, and it’s a beauty we invite you to explore within the pages of this magazine.
Each section of this magazine represents the temporary states of being that we pass through on the never ending cycle of impermanence. There is no beginning or end to this cycle, so the choice of a start is an arbitrary one:

- As much as our lives feel completely ordered in one moment, they often feel completely [dis]ordered and chaotic in the next.
- As much as we write off days as typical, they prove to be quite [a]typical in hindsight.
- As much as we feel drained, we allow it because, with time, we’ll be [re]vitalized just the same.
- As much as our conversations and ideas may flow organically from us, the stress of the [in]organic also offers growth.
- As much as we may feel like we’re living outside of our bodies, we can slip back into ourselves by translating the art of our soul onto a canvas, fully [em]bodied.
Impermanence allows us to discover ourselves as ever-changing dynamic beings. We can reimagine who we want to be, mess up, learn from our mistakes, and start again, because every version of us is impermanent, too.
When you read the pages that follow, remember that the same goes for this magazine. Every writer, sculptor, dancer, artist, staff member, and editor has channeled their creativity at just the right time to create work that exists in this exact moment of time right now, right in front of you, but which will soon be replaced with new ideas, new creativity. We invite you to pause and experience the full spectrum of [im]permanence before the next wave of creativity surfaces.
Until next time,
