Same Team, Better Energy: The War Eagles Bounce Back

After a tough loss to Decatur last Friday, the Woodward boys’ basketball team did not let that defeat define them. Instead, they used it as motivation, and the results have spoken for themselves. The loss served as a wake-up call. Players and coaches took time to reflect on what went wrong, focusing on better defense, smarter ball movement and stronger communication.

Seann Ingram ‘27 said the team knew change was needed right away. “The little things matter: defense, assignments and where each player is supposed to be. Every possession in the game matters, which we know, but now [we’re] solidifying that.”

“After the loss, we had a game the next day, and it felt personal,” Seann said. “The energy has been off the charts. We’re all coming back for the win.”

That mindset showed immediately when Woodward bounced back with a win over Greenforest on Jan. 10 with a final score of 73-48. The team played with higher energy, fewer mistakes and stronger focus. It was quite evident with the 25-point lead!

Woodward kept that momentum going on Jan. 13, with a dominant 89-67 win against Chamblee. Myles Hayes ’28 led with 25 points, 13 rebounds and five three-pointers, while Bentley Lusakueno ’28 added 26 points and seven rebounds to the scoreboard.

Seann said the Decatur loss still fuels the team.

“They came to our house and beat us, so we have to take the loss to heart, and we have to perform,” Seann said.

The boys have six games before the rematch with Decatur. Now, with back-to-back wins and renewed confidence, Woodward has shown that one loss doesn’t define a season. Let’s go, War Eagles! “February 3rd is circled on our calendar. We’re all dogs. We’re ready,” Seann said.

Woodward Girls’ Basketball Keeps Rolling

The Woodward girls’ basketball team has been building strong momentum with back-to-back wins. On Jan. 9, Woodward defeated Decatur 53-43 in a hard-fought home game. Throughout the game, the team played great defense and showcased great consistency on offense. The team stayed focused throughout the game and closed strong to secure the win.

The Lady Eagles were led to victory by Z Williams ’27 and Lauryn Dennis-Cooper ’26. Z dropped 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, while Lauryn posted 15 points and contributed heavily to the team’s defense. Another player making a difference was Kami Whitner ’27, who recorded 3 steals and a total of 9 points.

They followed that performance with an even more exciting victory on Jan. 13, defeating Chamblee 75-21. From start to finish, their energy and teamwork was clear, and every player who stepped on the court contributed to the team’s success.

Now, the girls are getting ready for their next challenge as they take on Lakeside this Friday, Jan. 16. With confidence from two big wins, these girls are in a great position to keep the momentum going.

Be sure to come out and support the Lady War Eagles as they look to continue their winning streak. Go Lady War Eagles!
