By Sabenah Abudu-Abrams

The CEO of Air Canada, Michael Rousseau, announced on Monday, March 30, that he would be stepping down amidst controversy over his statement regarding a plane crash at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. On Sunday, March 22, an Air Canada plane crashed into a fire truck, which was responding to an odor concern on another plane, shortly after it landed. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the incident, as staff stories appear to conflict, and controller duties on Sunday night have not yet been clarified. Amid the catastrophe, Michael Rousseau, who has been CEO since 2021, made a public statement regarding the crash primarily in English. This statement, spoken in English, offended many people, given that Canada’s national languages are English and French, prompting Rousseau’s abrupt resignation and Air Canada’s vow to replace him with someone who is bilingual.

Trump Administration Investigates 3 Medical Schools Due to Possible Race-Based Admissions

By Akiva Bryant

On March 25, the Trump administration notified Ohio State University, Stanford University and the University of California, San Diego, that they were investigating their consideration of race during the admission process. The administration is requesting information about applicants from the past seven years, which includes test scores, their home ZIP codes and familial ties to alumni or university donors by April 24, 2026; failure to provide this information may mean the colleges risk losing federal funding. Additionally, the administration is requesting copies of internal messages from the schools regarding diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). All three schools have released statements since the investigation. They have all acknowledged the investigation but have not yet explained what they will do in response. This investigation is a part of a larger effort led by President Donald Trump to remove DEI policies and programs at companies and universities. This crackdown is aimed at fighting “Unlawful DEI Discrimination,” which includes decisions allegedly based on race rather than merit, and “reverse racism,” which is alleged discrimination towards white people.

Trump’s Signature on Dollar Bill

By Joy Ferguson

On March 26, it was announced by the U.S. Treasury Department that President Donald Trump’s signature will now appear on U.S. paper currency, starting with the $100 bill. The signatures will start sometime in June 2026.  This decision is supposedly in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, also known as the Semiquincentennial. This new implementation will break a 165-year-long tradition where only the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury have their signatures on the U.S. currency. There have been different reactions to the President’s signature on US currency, such as Secretary of Treasury, Scott Bessent, who said, “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.” In response to the new dollar bills, democratic Rep. Shontel Brown (Ohio) called this decision “gross and un-American” on the platform X, also saying “But at least it will remind us who to thank when we pay more for gas, goods, and groceries.” Some people are now starting to call the new bills collectors’ pieces, with Senior Vice President of Numismatics at Heritage Auctions, Dustin Johnston saying, “Some collectors will think this is a great opportunity to set aside something that might gain value.” The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump, also approved the final design for a gold coin that has President Trump’s picture to help celebrate the Semiquincentennial.
