Black student found hanging on Delta State University Campus
By Alex Piazza
On Sept. 15, the body of Trey Reed, a 21-year-old black student, was found hanging from a tree on the campus of Delta State University. The police involved in the investigation deemed his death a suicide, as stated in a press conference by police chief Michael Peeler. Despite the police department’s assurance that there were no signs of foul play, which was supported by the autopsy conducted by the state, many residents who are aware of Mississippi’s history feel uneasy about the police department’s haste to rule out a possible hate crime.
Reed’s family has enlisted the help of Know Your Rights Camp, a company that promotes education, self empowerment and mass mobilization to black and brown people, to fully fund an independent autopsy for Reed. Additionally, the family has hired civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, who has stated that the Reed family has received “conflicting accounts and incomplete information,” about Reed’s death.
Body Identified in D4vd’s Trunk
By Joy Ferguson
On Sep. 8, a decomposing body was found in singer D4vd’s, real name David Anthony Burke’s, Tesla trunk in a tow yard. The car was registered to D4vd, and impounded after a “foul smell” was reported coming from it after sitting abandoned in Hollywood Hills for a month. D4vd is known for his popular songs “Romantic Homicide” and “Here With Me”. Although the body was discovered on Sep. 8, police did not identify the victim until Sep. 17. The victim was discovered to be now 15 year old Celeste Rivas-Hernendaz. Suspicions surrounding D4vd’s romantic involvement with Rivas-Hernendaz grew as they were found to have a matching tattoo saying “Shhh.” D4vd and Rivas-Hernendaz’s relationship goes all the way back to 2021 when Rivas-Hernendaz was only 11 years old, where they chatted on Discord with some of D4vd’s friends and fans. Rivas-Hernendaz was reported missing by her family when she was 13 years old and was last seen Apr. 5, 2024. There are many known pictures of them together, along with some of them having Rivas-Hernendaz’s face intentionally covered up when posted. Unfortunately, police do not have any idea on her time of death and have only found pieces of her remains, not her full body. While D4vd still hasn’t been charged, updates are still coming out on the case and police are hard at work.
Broadway’s Production Slump
By Harper Scully
The 18 new Broadway productions like “Tammy Faye,” “Boop!” and “Smash” from the 2024 to 2025 show season failed and have made little profit due to production costs and an uninterested audience. Newly released musicals and plays have been in the decline since coronavirus struck in 2020; 48 shows have debuted since then, and only 3 of them were profitable. Broadway isn’t the only place affected by the lack of tourism, the whole city is too, leading to a decline in profit for many businesses in New York. Despite this, productions like “Wicked” and “Hamilton” are still sought after as audiences generally choose popular musicals and shows over the newer productions. Theater executives are concerned for the future of Broadway due to the lack of public interest in the newer projects that are vital when it comes to the diversity of Broadway.
The Charlie Kirk Memorial
By Trey Voegtlin
Ever since Charlie Kirk’s death on Sept. 10, 2025, the news has flooded with his name, but, really, who was Kirk? Kirk was a political influencer that connected with the far right-youth demographic and based his platform on debating college students. Since his passing, President Trump has dubbed him a “martyr,” and further pushed this during Kirk’s memorial service on Sept. 21, 2025, referring to him as a “martyr for American freedom.” Kirk’s wife, Erika Kirk notably, forgave the shooter, Tyler Robinson, during her eulogy at the memorial and identified him as like the young men Kirk tried to save through his work with Turning Point USA.

Rope hanging from tree outside of Atlanta’s APEX Museum
By Tatum Trammell
Last Wednesday, Sep. 17, a rope was found hanging outside of the APEX Museum located in Atlanta, Georgia. The rope is said to have a noose-like appearance, leading to people questioning the intentions of someone leaving this rope at the APEX Museum. Founded in 1978, the APEX Museum is the first original African-American history museum in Atlanta. It shows the important history of civil rights, slavery and black excellence. The tree sits on Auburn Avenue, also known as Sweet Auburn, which is a historic district of Atlanta. To locals, the rope seems very coincidental because of its proximity to the museum.

Single Electric Vehicle Drivers Can No Longer Use HOV Lane
By Akiva Bryant
Beginning Sept. 30, 2025, all AFVs (Alternative Fuel Vehicles), such as those that use electricity (EVs), hydrogen and biofuels must meet the 2 person occupancy minimum requirement for driving on HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes on highways in Georgia. HOV lanes offer a quicker, efficient and cheaper way for carpoolers to commute. Additionally, these lanes benefit cities by reducing the need for more highways. HOV lanes in Georgia have been utilized since Dec. 14, 1994, spanning from I-20 to I-285, and drivers unlawfully using them can be fined up to $150, one point on the driver’s record and a misdemeanor. Prior to enforcement, however, the Georgia Department of Public Safety, alongside the Georgia Department of Transportation, are allowing a 30 day grace period prior to enforcement. Changes to HOV lanes are nationwide, as the FAST (Fixing America’s Surface Transportation) Act, signed by former president Barack Obama on Dec. 4, is set to expire on Sept. 30. The FAST Act authorized $305 billion in funding to states’ highway infrastructure, public transportation, motor vehicle safety and more.
