Andre Dickens Wins Mayoral Election

Andre Dickens was reelected as the Mayor of Atlanta following the Nov. 4 election. Dickens won a majority in a nonpartisan four-way race against his three competitors: Helmut Domagaski, Kalema Jackson and Eddie Andrew Meredith. Although the Atlanta Mayoral office is nonpartisan, it has been held by Democrats for multiple decades. Dickens continues this legacy as a Democrat. Before his time as Mayor, Dickens served on the Atlanta City Council and was chief development officer for a technology-based nonprofit.

 

Armistice Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918, World War I ended. This day is important in world history and has earned its place as a holiday in the United States as Armistice Day, or now Veterans’ Day. The armistice was signed at 5:45 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, bringing an end to the war. The total deaths, losses and casualties for the Allied and the Central Powers associated nations are 7,781,806 deaths, 18,681,257 wounded and 7,080,580 prisoners or wounded, totaling 33,434,443 casualties. Veterans Day is used to honor those who put their life on the line for the United States. Additionally, this holiday opened up opportunities to honor all veterans who were killed in the line of duty.

 

Democratic Wave in Voting across the U.S

This year’s 2025 elections resulted in a blue wave throughout the country. The Democratic party had statewide success in Virginia, Pennsylvania, California and New Jersey. In Georgia, the Democrats flipped two seats in the Public Service Commission. In New York, Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor-elect, was a big win for the Democratic Party because of his beliefs and appeal to Democratic voters both in and out of New York. During Trump’s first term in 2018, there was also a blue wave that foreshadowed the midterms, which ended in a majority for the Democratic Party, with them gaining 40 seats.

 

Drake Baldwin ROTY

Drake Baldwin started as a second-string catcher for the Braves; now he is the National League Rookie of the Year (ROTY). He finished the season starting 124 games with a 274 batting average, nineteen homers and 80 Runs Batted In (RBIs). He was not the initial favorite to win, but over time, he surpassed Cade Horton and Caleb Durbin. Drake Baldwin got 21 out of 30 first-place votes to win, making him the 10th Braves player to win the Rookie of the Year award.

 

Flight Cancellations and Delays Amid Government Shutdown

On Friday, Nov 7, 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released an emergency order to reduce flights at 40 major airports by 10%. The airports include the “Core 30,” the 30 busiest airports in the country, as well as 10 other major airports. So far, airlines have canceled more than 5,000 flights scheduled from Sunday to Wednesday. Despite the government shutdown ending, airlines are still warning travelers of possible future cancellations and delays due to staff shortages and weather issues.

 

Frankenstein 2025 Releases Exclusively On Netflix

Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 adaptation of “Frankenstein has officially been released exclusively on Netflix and stars cult-favorite horror actress Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac and Euphoria heartthrob Jacob Elordi. Although the film isn’t necessarily character-accurate to the original 1818 Mary Shelley novel, it has received high praise from critics for its costuming, plot and alternate ending that strays from the original adaptation. Although at first glance the film didn’t look as appealing to audiences, Elordi’s performance as “The Creature” was fascinating to viewers and has been a big showcase of the actor’s range. 

 

Government Shutdown End in Sight

On Sunday, Nov. 9, the Senate presented and passed a short term funding bill to give money to some government agencies through Jan. 30, which would effectively end the government shutdown if passed. For the bill to be put into effect, it also has to be passed by the House of Representatives, who voted in favor of the bill on Wednesday Nov. 12. The final step to ending the 43 day shutdown was the president’s approval of the bill, which he signed Thursday, Nov. 13.

 

Michael Jackson Biopic Trailer

The long-awaited “MICHAEL” biopic is now on the radar, as the trailer has just been released. It officially went out to the public on Nov. 6, and is leaving people “thrilled” about what the biopic will bring. “MICHAEL” is an upcoming biopic about the late pop superstar, Michael Jackson, whose revolutionary legacy changed the world. Michael Jackson, often considered the “King of Pop,” is one of the most revered celebrities in history and his passing left fans in need of a biopic to reminisce about his impact on fans. The biopic stars Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, son of Jackson 5 member, Jermaine Jackson. The biopic is already breaking records with the most viewed trailer in history with a whopping 116 million views. The film is set to be in theaters April 24, 2026

 

Pakistan Suicide Bombing

On Nov. 11, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb outside a district court in Islamabad, Pakistan, killing 12 and injuring 27. The bomber detonated his bomb next to a police officer’s car after being denied access to enter the court. The attack has been claimed by the Pakistan Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban, who stated that they were targeting those who enforced “un-Islamic” laws.

 

The Thailand and Cambodia Ceasefire

After a five-day border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, Trump organized a peace truce between the nations in Oct. After multiple Thai soldiers were injured due to a landmine on the border, the Thai government has stopped efforts to implement a ceasefire. The Thai Supreme Commander said, “The Thai military is halting all agreements until Cambodia can show clear sincerity that they will not be hostile.” Cambodia’s foreign ministry has expressed concerns over the blockade of the ceasefire. This suspension included the removal of heavy firearms from the Thailand-Cambodia border and the release of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war.

 

“Wicked: For Good” Coming Out

Shortly after “Wicked: Part 1” came out, “Wicked: For Good” was announced and is coming out on Nov. 21. The cast of “Wicked: Part 1” are coming back: such as Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and Ethan Slater. The first trailer for “Wicked: For Good” was released on June 4, eight months after “Wicked: Part 1,” and the final trailer was released Sep. 24, two months before the movie is set to come out.  Fans are “rejoicing” after watching the “Wicked: For Good” trailer and are counting down the days until the movie is released.

 

Women’s Soccer Team Coming to Atlanta

This week, Atlanta was awarded an expansion team to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with a play start date in 2028. Arthur Blank, owner of Atlanta United, the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Drive Golf Club, paid a league record $165 million to bring women’s soccer to Atlanta, making it the fourth sports team he will own in the city. 

This new team will be the second women’s soccer team to be in Atlanta. The now defunct Atlanta Beat played in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) from 2001-2003, and the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) from 2010-2011.
