Credit @wa_spirtAs the winter sports Wrestling and Swimming and Diving season come to an end, the seniors feel sentimental over their last year playing these sports at WA. Boys Wrestling holds a current record of 10-0 and is heading to state tournaments this week. Girls Wrestling also heads towards individual state championships in the upcoming week. On the other hand, theBoys Swimming and Diving has a current record of 3-5 while the Girls lead 6-2. The girls’ dive team broke history with the first two girl state qualifiers in 8 years. To celebrate the seniors’ last season, they played games during their Senior Nights.
Ava Thompson ‘23, of the girls’ Swimming and Diving team, reflects on her last season swimming with her team.
“I feel honored and proud of myself during my last swim at Woodward,” Thompson said. “It is bittersweet because it’s coming to an end.”
Thompson feels grateful that her friends could come out and support her during her final season.
“My favorite part about senior night is that my friends got to come watch me swim for the first time,” Thompson said.
Elliot Anderson ‘23, who is on the boys’ swimming team, cherishes the many close bonds he has with his teammates.
“I will miss swimming for WA,” Anderson said. “As much as I like the idea of not having to get up at the crack of dawn to dive into an icy pool or do more pull-ups than I can count, I will miss the team aspect of it. Experimenting with relay teams or learning drills with my team was always something to look forward to.”
Anderson reminiscences on the fond memories he shares with his teammates.
“My favorite memory has to be the Orlando trip,” Anderson said. “We went to Disney and Universal and really grew closer as a team. From last minute yoga routines to tables for one, this trip is perhaps the most memorable I will have for a long time.”
He believes that the close bonds between his teammates makes them a better team overall.
“I have been on the varsity team for four years now,” Anderson said. “This season is the closest I have seen our team be. When one of our swimmers [is] in the water, the rest of the team is cheering them on and as a result, we have a very impressive state team this year.”
Anderson appreciated the support his friends showed by coming on Senior Night for his last season.
“I enjoyed seeing some of my friends come out to support the team,” Anderson said. “I know Swimming and Diving is nowhere near as popular as football or basketball, but it is nice to see some support after a hard season.”
Malin Tangsujaritpunt ‘23, who is on the girls’ wrestling team, values the bonding aspect with her teammates and her coaches.
“It’s really sad that this is my [final] season because I feel like it is still the beginning,” Tangsujaritpunt said. “I want to go to state duals with my team again [because] it was really fun. I’m really gonna miss this incredible team and coaches.”
Tangsujaritpunt feels optimistic about her individual performance as well as her team’s performance.
“I feel like this year, we progress[ed] as a team significantly, and I think I have found my momentum and stride in wrestling,” Tangsujaritpunt said. “I could see my improvement, but there are still some things to work on.”
She admired the support her teammates showed her on wrestling Senior Night.
“My favorite part on wrestling night was pinning my opponent and hearing my teammates cheer for me,” Tangsujaritpunt said.

“I really liked how the Woodward community came to support,” Seeb said. “It was the first time in a while due to the pandemic and restrictions on spectators that a lot of people came to watch.”
